Two salt water ponnds next to San Francisco Bay, Marin County

Get Involved

By the end of this generation, without foundational changes in our shoreline architecture, one-third of San Rafael’s population and two-thirds of our economic base will be periodically flooded.

All transportation funneled through San Rafael – the gateway linking the Bay Area and northwestern California – is threatened by flooding and sea level rise: freeways, SMART trains, Golden Gate Transit, ferries and Airporters. The North-South Greenway, the backbone highway for bicycles, pedestrians, and active transportation lies within a high-risk flood zone that will incur more frequent flooding as the sea level rises.

In Southeast San Rafael – home to approximately 16,000 residents, service workers, critical infrastructure, and much of Marin county’s support services – existing roadway designs pose an evacuation risk, causing this area to be isolated following a major flood and/or earthquake.

San Rafael is at a critical juncture: in the next fifteen months, significant decisions and funding opportunities pertaining to shore and flood resiliency and transportation design affecting our neighborhoods and businesses, will be addressed by our city and regional decision makers.

Resilient Shore focuses on: (1) shoreline resilience/flood risk reduction; (2) transportation alternatives, and (3) risk management and insurance. We’ve been building a multidisciplinary team and connecting with decision-makers, researchers, and stakeholders since 2015.

We’re seeking immediate and sustaining contributions. We’re raising $250,000 for the first fifteen months of full-on outreach and advocacy to influence public policy and funding priorities as we grow our organization. Our goal is the best-of-all-worlds Shore and Flood Resiliency Plans and transportation projects that benefit everyone.

We invite you to join us to addressing these critical challenges.
